2008 - 19th Annual USS SEA CAT SS-399 REUNION - 2008

---Just a few things we did on liberty---

 Shipmates and Ladies,

In the grand scheme of things when God was creating the world – on the eighth day, he created a divine creature, his masterpiece, and this he called a SUBMARINER. These submariners he gave the gifts of good looks and great intelligence. Then he gave them black steel messengers of death called the “smoke boats” that roamed the depths of the ocean.
He gave them great knowledge so they could pass their “quals test” and good looks so, they could entertain the evening ladies at the Brown Derby, Gate Bar and all the clubs on Duval Street. (God really loved Key West). After these men passed their “quals test” God pinned dolphins on their chest and called them “Diesel Boat Sailors”.

On a serious note, the average American can never understand the sacrifices and bond between submariners. It is in this spirit that we muster once again in Branson to visit our shipmates and renew old friendships.

The Sea Cat “recon” party arrived in Branson on Friday and Saturday to set up the meeting room and arrange shows and dining events. We owe a huge thank to Lynn and Carolyn Trump for negotiating and arranging all the events at the Ramada Inn. It was a gorgeous place to hold a reunion and we all had a great time.

 Highlights:

Saturday, September 27

We saw our first portable Drive-in Movie Theater next door to the Ramada. It was one of those huge plastic blow up screens – pretty neat. Ed Hymer and I walked down and watched the movie for a while - “Bullet” with Steve McQueen.
Prior to the movie there was a classic car show.

Sunday, September 28

Ed, Lynn and Mac played golf at Thousand Hills Golf Club which should be renamed to Thousand and One Hills.
That afternoon check-in processes begin - As our shipmates checked-in, they were issued free black Sea Cat T-shirts with Night Patrol logo on the back. The ladies were issued blue T-shirts with Sea Cat logo. We had enough money in the Sea Cat fund to cover the cost for all attending the reunion. We visited for awhile and went to dinner at the “Red Lobster”.

Monday, September 29

We all had free breakfasts’ during our stay – we met back at the hospitality room and told some sea stories. For lunch most of us ate at a great country café downtown Branson called the “Farmhouse Café”.
Of course, the ladies did some shopping. That evening we had scheduled to go see the Jim Stafford Show - a very funny man.

Tuesday, September 30

We had our regular meeting and several places were discussed for our next reunion. New London was selected. Lynn and Carolyn Trump will travel to New London between now and February to arrange lodging and places of interest.
Also, at the meeting Neil Chandler had to step down as President due to various reasons but still wanted to participate as a director. Lynn Trump was elected as President and Ed Hymer was added as a director. Dave Garraway volunteered to help with the contact list in his area.
Some of our shipmates had lunch downtown on the river on a barge converted to an excellent restaurant called the “White River Fish and Steak House”. Great dining! Almost as great as the GITMO Hilton on a barge. That evening we had tickets to see the “Twelve Irish Tenors”.

Wednesday, October 1

Some of our shipmates played golf at Thousand Hills Golf Club.
Our best ever dinner cruise! We arrived at the State Park Marina early at 1500 for a Memorial Service for all our lost submarines and departed shipmates on Eternal Patrol.
The Showboat Branson Belle located below Table Rock dam departed at 1600. All of us enjoyed a great dinner and a very good variety show and of course being on the water once again.

Thursday, October 2

We played at one of the most beautiful golf course we have ever seen – just awesome and breathtaking – “Branson Creek Golf Club”. Next to “Branson Creek” is John Daly’s “Murder Rock” golf club – another great course. If you are a golfer and go to Branson, you got to play this course. Jim Aitchison, Ed Hymer, Lynn Trump and Gene McLeod had a great time.
Our Sea Cat auction is fast becoming a real popular event with everyone. Last year we raised over a $1000 for our Sea Cat fund and this year we have matched that. We ordered in pizza for everybody and settled in for a fun night. We had some great prizes that our shipmates donated and a mystery prize that sold several times. Someone looked at it and said it had strong aphrodisiac powers. I think we made $65 on it – can’t tell you what it was because it would not be a mystery anymore. Hint – it had a long tail, four legs and chocolate.

October 3 – Friday

We played golf; the ladies went shopping and did some afternoon shows.
That evening the banquet was just superb. The food was excellent and we had a great speaker from Branson’s Veterans Task Force – Ron Foreman, USMC (Pilot during Viet Nam).
Some of the other shows visited were Tillis Family Reunion, Roy Rogers, Noah’s Ark musical, Dixie Stamped, Shoji Tobuchi, Titanic, Yakov Smiroff, Baldknodbers and several others.

The ladies said the shopping was great too – Tanger Mall, Factory Outlets, Branson Landing Mall.
The scenery, atmosphere and friendship made for a great reunion. Thanks shipmates.

Now hear this! All the above is the straight skinny right from the mess decks and all the sea stories that were retold at Branson were certified 100 percent honest and truthful by Bill Dean our resident historian.
