Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas is about 70 miles from Key West.
Dr. Samual Mudd was held prisoner here after his trial in 1865 for aiding (setting a broken leg) John Wilkes Booth the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln.
Yellow fever broke out in 1867 and the Fort's physician died. Due to Dr. Mudd aiding the sick and combating the fever outbreak, he was pardon in 1869 by President Johnson.
